Why farm and ranch structures are exposed
Barns and grain bins are often the tallest structures on open land, far from other buildings or trees. Barns frequently store hay and other combustible materials, and they may shelter animals. A lightning protection system gives a strike a safe path to ground instead of through the structure.
Livestock considerations
Lightning can harm animals near fences, trees, and in open fields, and a protection system on a barn protects the structure itself, not animals out in pasture. For livestock buildings, we pay attention to bonding metal components such as stalls, gates, and waterers where they connect to the building, and to where grounding is placed relative to animal areas.

Barns are often tall, isolated, and full of combustible materials, which makes them strong candidates for protection.
Can grain bins be protected?
We can evaluate grain bins. Their height and metal construction affect the approach, and some may need specific bonding and grounding rather than a full air terminal system.
Will a lightning protection system protect livestock in the pasture?
No. A system protects the structure it's installed on. Animals in open fields, near fences, or under trees remain exposed during storms.
Can surge protection help my well pump?
