What We Check
What we test and repair on existing systems
We check the whole path from every point on the roof to the ground rods, then repair and re-ground what we find.
Loose or missing points
Air terminals that have worked loose, bent, snapped off, or gone missing after storms, hail, or roof work.
Broken or detached cable
Conductor cable that's broken, cut, sagging, pulled off its fasteners, or no longer continuous from the roof to ground.
Corroded connectors
Clamps, splices, and bonds that have corroded or loosened over the years, especially on older copper and aluminum systems.
Ground rods
Ground rods and their connections, including rods that are missing, buried and disconnected, damaged, or never fully installed.
Re-grounding after a re-roof
Roof replacements are one of the most common reasons a lightning protection system stops working. Points get set back loosely, cable gets cut or left off, and the connection down to the ground rods is easy to miss.
We check the full path from every point to ground and reconnect or re-ground whatever was left undone. Planning a new roof? See getting a new roof with lightning rods.
Additions, new porches, and new rooftop equipment
An addition, a new porch roof, a garage, or new equipment on the roof can leave part of the building outside the original system. We'll show you what isn't covered and extend the system so the whole structure is protected again, installed to NFPA 780.
Old and antique systems
Many older Texas and Oklahoma homes, farmhouses, and barns still have rods that went up long ago. Some are in good shape; many have broken cable, loose or missing points, or ground connections that have rusted away.
We keep original pieces wherever they're still sound, and replace what isn't. For glass-ball rods and weathervanes, see decorative and antique lightning rods.

FAQ
Lightning rod repair and inspection FAQ
How do I know if my lightning rods still work?
You often can't tell from the ground. A system can look fine from the street while a cable is broken on the back side of the roof or a ground connection has rusted through. An inspection checks the whole path from each point to ground.
Can you repair an old lightning rod system instead of replacing it?
Often, yes. If the points and much of the cable are sound, we repair broken runs, replace corroded connectors, and re-ground the system. If parts are too far gone, we'll tell you what needs replacing.
Our roofer put the rods back. Should I have them checked?
It's a good idea. Rods reset during a re-roof are often missing connections, bonding, or the link to the ground rods. We'll check it and fix what's missing.
We added on to the house. Does the lightning protection need updating?
Usually. An addition or new roof section can sit outside the original system. We'll extend the system so the new part of the building is covered.
Do you do repairs and inspections in Oklahoma too?
Yes. We inspect and repair lightning rod systems on homes, farms, ranches, and commercial buildings across Texas and Oklahoma.
