Oilfield & Oil and Gas Lightning Protection

Lightning protection, bonding, grounding, and surge protection for oil and gas sites, with a focus on the Permian Basin: tank batteries, pump jacks, field buildings, shops, and control rooms.

Serving oil and gas sites across the Permian Basin

What's Included

What oilfield lightning protection includes

Every system is planned around your structure and local conditions, with the goal of following recognized industry standards such as NFPA 780.

Tank batteries

Bonding and grounding for tank batteries, with the approach matched to the tank construction and your company's standards.

Pump jacks & wellsite equipment

Grounding and bonding for pump jacks, wellheads, and the electrical and control equipment around them.

Field buildings & shops

Lightning protection systems for shops, offices, and metal buildings on the lease or in town.

Control rooms & automation

Surge protection for control rooms, automation, communications, and the power feeding them.

Why oilfield sites are exposed

Permian Basin sites sit on flat, open ground where tanks, pump jacks, and buildings are often the tallest things around. West Texas storms can also bring lightning with little rain. A strike or a nearby strike can damage equipment, controls, and communications and shut down production.

Working within your safety program

Oil and gas sites have their own safety rules, and many have areas classified for flammable vapors. We work inside your site's safety program: we follow your permit, access, and training requirements, and we coordinate with your HSE, engineering, and operations staff before any work starts. Hazardous-area classification and electrical equipment selection stay with your engineers and electricians, and we plan our work around theirs.

Grounding in West Texas ground

Dry sand and hard caliche make good grounding harder to reach in the Permian Basin than in wetter parts of Texas. Grounding layouts may need extra electrodes, ground rings, or other approaches, and they're designed for each site. Our goal is for systems to follow recognized industry standards such as NFPA 780, along with your company's own requirements.

FAQ

Oilfield Lightning Protection FAQ

Do steel tanks need lightning rods?

It depends on the tank, how it's built and grounded, and your company's standards. For some equipment, the main focus is bonding and grounding rather than air terminals. We'll look at your site and talk it through with your team.

Can you work on an active lease?

Yes, within your site's safety program. We follow your permit, access, and training requirements and coordinate timing with operations.

Do you handle hazardous-area electrical work?

Hazardous-area classification and electrical equipment selection stay with your engineers and licensed electricians. We coordinate our lightning protection, bonding, and grounding work with theirs.

Can you protect control rooms and automation?

Yes. Surge protection on power, communication, and control lines helps protect the equipment that keeps a site running, and it works best with solid grounding and bonding.
