Why Hill Country properties need lightning protection
Central Texas gets thunderstorms in both spring and fall, when Gulf moisture pushes inland and meets fronts moving in from the north. Summer storms can build quickly over the hills west of Austin.
A lightning protection system protects the structure; it does not replace personal lightning safety. When thunder roars, go indoors.
Many Hill Country homes are built on ridgelines and hilltops to take advantage of the views, which also makes them some of the most exposed structures around. Lake Travis and Lake LBJ homes, boat docks, rural ranch properties, wineries, and wedding venues are common across Travis, Hays, Burnet, and Blanco counties.
The ground itself is a design factor. Much of the Hill Country sits on shallow limestone with thin soil, which makes grounding more challenging than in deep-soil areas. Grounding electrodes may need a different layout to reach an effective ground.

Is a hilltop or ridgeline home more exposed to lightning?
Structures that stand higher than their surroundings are generally more exposed. Many Hill Country homes are built on high ground for the views, which is why we pay close attention to roof layout, air terminal placement, and conductor routing on these properties.
My property sits on rock. Can you still ground a lightning protection system?
Yes. Shallow limestone is common in the Hill Country and makes driving long ground rods difficult. Grounding can often be accomplished with alternative approaches such as ground rings or other electrode layouts, which we'll evaluate at your property.
Can you protect a Lake Travis home and boat dock?
Yes. We can design protection for lakefront homes and discuss options for docks and other structures near the water. Each site is different, so we'll look at the layout in person.
Do wineries and wedding venues need lightning protection?
Venues where people gather, especially open-sided pavilions, tall barns, and buildings on open ground, are good candidates. A system protects the structure, and it should be paired with a clear weather plan for moving guests indoors during storms.
