How surges happen
Lightning doesn't have to hit your building to cause damage. A strike to a nearby power line, tree, or the ground can send a surge through utility lines and into your wiring. Surge protective devices limit that spike and divert excess energy to ground.
Surge protection and lightning rods work together
Lightning rods protect the structure from a direct strike; surge protection protects what's plugged in. A complete lightning protection system includes both, and surge devices work best when the building has proper grounding and bonding.
Who needs it
Homes with home offices, smart-home systems, and expensive appliances; businesses with IT equipment and controls; and farms and ranches with pumps and irrigation systems all benefit. Surge Protection FAQ
Do power strips provide enough surge protection?
Plug-in surge strips offer limited protection at the outlet. A service-entrance surge protective device protects the whole building's wiring, and the two can work together.
Can surge protection prevent all lightning damage?
No device can guarantee protection from every event, but properly installed surge protection significantly reduces the risk of damage from surges.
Do I need surge protection if my home already has lightning rods?
Yes. Lightning rods don't protect the electrical system from surges coming in on utility lines.
Can you protect a well pump?
Yes. Surge protection can be installed for well pumps and their controls, which are common in rural Texas.
